Health Insurance

Hungarian authorities require you to have a valid health insurance to study in Hungary.

It is compulsory for all registered students to have a health insurance that is valid in Europe /’Schengen countries’/ (no
students are allowed to register without it). The following types are accepted by the University:

  • European Health Insurance Card
  • Insurance provided by the University (offered by the Generali Insurance Company)
  • Insurance from the students’ home country that meets the contents of the health insurance offered by the Generali
Insurance Company (please note that in this case all insured students have to pay for all treatments by themselves
    to the medical provider!)

The health insurance contract between the University of Debrecen Medical and Health Science Centre (UDMHSC /
DEOEC) and the Generali Insurance Co. offers the services listed below to foreign students of the University, together
with their relatives during their stay in Hungary.

    Part 1.:         ‘STUDIUM’ Health Insurance

The health insurance covers the costs of the insured person’s necessary medication and medical treatment arising from
illness or accidents. With the exception of emergency treatment, the insurance covers only the costs of medical treatment
carried out at clinical departments of the University of Debrecen (DEOEC) – or at other health institutions to which the
patient is referred by the DEOEC.

Referral from the Primary Care Provider (Hajnalka Tamás. M.D.) is always needed for further examinations except for
    emergency treatment!

Visiting any medical provider without the referral from the above mentioned general practitioner, you have to pay all cost
of the medical treatments as the insurance company will not justify any treatments.
The limit of cover to be applied with respect to the medical services within the insurance period is HUF 2.000.000. In
medically justified cases, the insurance company will pay 70% of the price of the prescribed medicine (glasses are not
included). Sub-limit of cover to be applied with respect to pharmaceuticals and therapeutic aid within the insurance period
is HUF 200.000/ insurance period. The regional scope of this part is Hungary.
In order to get this compensation, you need to have a medical report from the doctor and the invoice (SZÁMLA) with
your name on it from the pharmacy. (The invoice should not be older than 1 month! DO NOT FORGET TO ASK FOR A
‘SZÁMLA’ AT THE CASHIER!) You have to hand in all papers and invoices to Hajnalka Tamás, M. D. and you will
receive the reimbursement in cash at the International Educational Center.

    The insurance does not cover:

  • dental treatment (except for emergencies and resulting from accidents)
  • hospital nursing due to pregnancy and abortion (except for medically justified cases)
  • delivery and treatment of newborn babies
  • prescription of contraceptive pills
  • cosmetic, plastic and rehabilitation treatment
  • alcohol and narcotic detoxification cures
  • illnesses caused by HIV
  • the costs of medical examinations necessary for the preparation of health certificates
  • any illnesses/conditions that has incurred the insured person before registration to the University

March to 1st September, is HUF 31,500 for students at the University of Debrecen Medical and Health Science Centre and
HUF 36,500 for their dependants (wives, husbands and children only).
